Design Changes
- A new ship-line has been added, the Hulk, which counters the fire ships and is countered by galley-line.
- Ship stats have been modified across the board, relationships and roles are largely similar to before.
- The second page at the Dock has been removed and the locations of many upgrades and ships adjusted.
- New Naval Technologies have been introduced, and existing naval technologies have been updated.
Developer Note
"This tournament includes a preview of upcoming changes to naval combat in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition! It includes new ships, new technologies and new game play features.\n\nThis kind of early look isn't something we do very often, and we're excited to give you this first look at the improvements coming your way next year.\n\nWe wish the best of luck to all of the tournament's competing players, and keep an eye out for patch notes as updates roll around to catch when these changes are going live!\n\nPlease note: while these features have been tested, they should still be considered a work in progress and not the final product."
Units
- Ship statistics have been revamped to no longer rely on arcane calculations of different attack and armor bonuses, and have been greatly simplified.
- Ship combat now only uses either pierce damage (Galleys and Equivalent Unique Ships) or melee damage (Fire Ship, Demolition Ship, Hulk, Cannon Galleons), and a single case of attack bonus (Long Ranged Ship class).
- Not all statistics changed (like ship HP) are reflected here, as ship relationships between one another are kept broadly unchanged.
New Ship line: Hulk/War Hulk/Carrack
- Short ranged ship, attacks with ropes and hooks to mimic boarding.
- Counters Fire Ships, weak to Galleys.
- Benefits from Melee Attack Upgrades.
- Upgraded alongside Fire Ships and Galleys.
Demolition Ship
- Reduced damage to fit into a more situational role.
- Upgraded as a single line.
- No longer available to civilizations with a (castle age) Unique Ship (Vikings, Portuguese, Koreans).
Fishing Ship
- Can garrison into Docks.
- Queue Fish Traps and Toggle Automatic Fish are set on the Fishing Ships themselves.
- Receives Ship Armor class.
Galley-line
- Receives Long Ranged Ship armor class.
- Gains bonus against Long Ranged Ship.
- Loses bonus against all ships.
Fire-line
- Gains bonus against Long Ranged Ship.
- Loses bonus against all ships.
- Damage type changed to melee.
Cannon Galleon (And Equivalents)
- Receives Long Ranged Ship armor class.
Trade Cog
- Now can select between 5 different options for gold/wood ratio on the Trade Cog UI.
- Selection affects all units globally.
- Some trade cog information in the game is displayed incorrectly, we are aware
