Appendixes
Appendix A: Methodology
I’ve had enough people suggest potential characters for the list (some have been added, some
have not) that I think it might be a good idea to explain some of my methodology for who does
and doesn't count for the list. I’ve explained this a little on my Tumblr, but it's probably a good
idea to recap it in the actual document itself. The simple version of it is that the goal of this list is
to document every character in Magic lore/on a Magic card that is unambiguously explicitly queer.
Before I get into the details on my process, I feel I need to go a bit into the history of this list and
how that informs the process. I think there's something really compelling about how WotC does
queer representation in Magic. The way it includes major face of the franchise type characters
like Chandra and obscure lore only characters like Orhaft Stoneback. There's something about
this approach that makes being queer feel like a totally normal thing in the Multiverse. So I felt
that to properly appreciate this approach, I wanted to document just how many queer characters
there were in Magic lore to help establish the proper scope of how gay Magic is. The sections
for the D&D characters and UB characters was kind of born of a sense of thoroughness. If the
initial Magic lore version of the list was about analyzing WotC's attempts at representation, then
the expanded version was more about acknowledging these other characters for fun…plus it
helps make Magic feel more queer.
So how do I determine who is canonically queer? Whenever possible, textual evidence is best.
For Magic lore, that means the story or official lore articles. Magic is usually pretty explicit about
labeling queer characters as queer, even if it's nothing more than the character using they/them
pronouns. Occasionally, I will also rely on word of god statements from the authors or other
WotC employees, especially when clarifying somewhat more ambiguous characters. For Magic
lore especially, I’m interested in characters that WotC officially acknowledges as queer. The
Magic lore version of this list was about giving credit where credit is due and so it's about
shining a spotlight on the characters WotC has officially labeled.
With UB, I’m not necessarily gonna search out a bunch of primary sources just to double check.
I mostly use things like fan wikis. Sometimes I’ll use the LGBT Characters Wiki as a starting
place for IP I’m not familiar with, but never as my sole source because they can be light on
details. I always follow up any leads from that wiki with a dedicated fandom wiki, where I’ll read
the character's wiki page. I look mostly for certain key words or phrases. Direct labels make
things fast, as well as things like “boyfriend/girlfriend” or “husband/wife” in descriptions of same
gender relationships. The Fallout wiki has a page detailing LGBT representation that helped a
lot. The TARDIS wiki has a rather thorough categorization system including sections on queer
identity that include large lists of characters who aren't cisgender or heterosexual. So does the
Marvel Database (I’ve been preemptively reading up for the upcoming Marvel sets.)
The D&D list is mostly just a direct copy of Justice Geddes’s list of queer characters from the
Battle for Baldur's Gate set with a few additions. Their twitter handle was stolen by trolls, so
including the D&D characters on this list was partially just an excuse to have a redundant
document of this list, including screenshots of the original tweet thread captured via wayback
machine.
So where do I draw the line? Like I said earlier, my focus is on explicit and unambiguous
characters. I'm not looking to document every queer coded character or popular queer
headcanons in fandom. I want the characters that have actual evidence to their identity. The
more explicit the labels the better. Authorial intent matters too, which is why I accept word of
god statements. It's not about if a character can be interpreted as queer…I want the characters
that are meant to be queer. Retcons are obviously acceptable because that happens sometimes
with long running media with multiple authors, as long as it's explicit.
A specific editorial choice of mine is to ignore characters who are “nonbinary” because their
species doesn't have the same biological gender binary as humans. Stuff like the aetherborn
from Magic or Time Lords from Doctor Who. Generally a character is only counted as nonbinary
if they're nonbinary by the standards of their species.
Appendix B: Honorable Mentions
For this list I’ve largely been using “on a card” to mean “has a legendary creature/planeswalker
card representing them.” This is because for Magic lore, legendary cards are what establish a
character’s appearance and without them there's no way to really know if a character is in the
art of other cards. But UB adds a unique opportunity for the art of cards to show a recognizable
named character without it necessarily being a legendary card representing that character. It's
not quite as good as the character getting a legendary card, but it is still worth acknowledging.
I’m also gonna put characters who only got a reskin style card in this section because it also feels not as official as getting their own card.

Appendix C: Corner Cases
Magic Lore
Karn (agender/nonbinary?, he/him)
Wiki
Comments: Mark Rosewater, Karn’s original creator, has acknowledged how a lot of nonbinary
fans feel a connection to Karn and while he wasn't originally written as nonbinary, Mark has said
that if he was writing Karn today he doesn't think Karn would necessarily identify as any gender,
but would generally accept people calling him by he/him pronouns out of habit. That said, Mark
has also acknowledged that he's not in charge of Karn anymore (and hasn't been for a long
time) so it's not actually up to him, and WotC generally doesn't acknowledge him as a nonbinary
character. There's also questions of construct characters and whether or not they can really
count as nonbinary rep, although considering the pronouns Urza assigned Karn were “it/its” then
Karn using “he/him” does kind of make him feel a little more trans. It's still ambiguous enough
that I’ve left him off the main list.
Tezzeret (nonbinary?, he/him)
Wiki
Comments: So there's this excerpt from Test of Metal of Tezzeret describing his sense of self
perception floating around right now that has everyone talking because it sounds hella
nonbinary:
But like…we have a couple problems here that keep this from being a confirmation. 1) Gender
isn't actually mentioned here? There's definitely subtext here that allows this passage to be
interpreted as being about gender, but textually it’s more likely indicating Tezzeret has some
transhumanist opinions about himself. 2) Test of Metal is dubiously canon at the best of times.
The bulk of the book was retconned as a fever dream Tezzeret had when Bolas was
reconstructing his body after Jace left him for dead in Agents of Artifice. Now, presumably this
shouldn't matter for this type of self reflection…but it does make using it as proof for anything
complicated. 3) Honestly WotC has never followed up on this or acknowledged it, and really
that's one of the big lines I draw between something being explicitly canon or not.
At best, we can acknowledge Tezzeret as heavily nonbinary coded but I hesitate to call him
explicitly canonically nonbinary.
Ajani Goldmane (gay?, he/him)
Wiki
Comments: While I can't find the original source of this, there was once an alleged ex-WotC
employee who came forward anonymously and revealed a lot behind the scenes information
about some of Magic’s lore. One of the facts they revealed was that Ajani was originally going to
be revealed as Magic’s first gay male planeswalker, only for WotC to decide having Magic's first gay planeswalker be someone inhuman and “monstrous” was bad optics. So they changed
gears and made Ral their first gay planeswalker.
So is Ajani gay? Maybe. Ajani’s sexuality has never been confirmed in any particular direction,
with the most he’s ever gotten being some light ship tease with Brimaz, the Leonin King of
Theros (who probably could also earn a spot on this list but I don't feel like making an entry for
every character who has ever had a little homoerotic ship tease, we’d be here all day.)
Gev and Hugs (he/him for both)
Comments: While there was initially some speculation on the exact nature of Gev and Hugs
relationship, Jay Anelli found out that the author’s intent was for them to be platonic life
partners. I'm gonna leave them here in the Corner Cases section because “platonic life
partners” can still be seen as a type of queer relationship, but it's a little more of an edge case
compared to other types of relationships.
The Speed Demon (It/Its)
Comments: I’m not sure how to categorize this one. Normally, I ignore inhuman things like
constructs, robots, and oozes getting referred to with they or or it pronouns because it isn't
necessarily indicative of a trans identity. Demons in Magic lore however are traditionally
identified as male and given he/him pronouns. The Speed Demon using it/its pronouns isn't
normative for its species…but The Speed Demon also isn't like most other demons in Magic lore
and in some ways seems less sapient than is typical, more force of nature and less rational
being. So I'm leaving it here for now.
Betor (they/them)
Comments: As seen in a screenshot down below, while Ureni is they/them for gender reasons
Betor is they/them for “gestalt consciousness” reasons.
Universes Beyond
The Doctor [Doctor Who] (sexuality and pronouns vary by regeneration)
Comments: I’m just gonna take a moment to say that the nature of Time Lord gender identity
and sexuality is probably very, very complicated and beyond the scope of this list…but I did
want to take a moment to acknowledge 13, 14, and 15 as the three explicitly queer incarnations
of the Doctor.
The Face of Boe [Doctor Who] (possibly omnisexual, he/him)
Comments: Listen…while it's heavily implied that omnisexual icon Captain Jack Harkness
eventually becomes the Face of Boe, it's never explicitly stated in canon. So…he doesn't make
the main list.
Leonardo da Vinci [Assassin's Creed] (???, he/him)
Comments: Was the historical Leonardo da Vinci some flavor of queer? Maybe. Is Leonardo da
Vinci as portrayed in Assassin's Creed II some flavor of queer? Maybe. According to my
research, Ubisoft was vague about it. Still, a compelling argument can be made for his inclusion,
so into the Maybe pile you go.
Alexios [Assassin’s Creed] (possibly bisexual, he/him)
Comments: Kassandra is the canonical protagonist of Assassin's Creed Odyssey, so she's the
one who canonical goes around Ancient Greece seducing all those men and women. However,
if you play Odyssey as Alexios then you can romance both men and women…so
like…the non-canonical version of Alexios is explicitly bi, and we could probably extrapolate that
to the canonical version of him from Kassandras version of events, but it's not explicitly stated.
Lord of the Rings characters in general
Comments: Listen…we all know that Tolkien didn't deliberately write any characters in LotR to
be gay or trans or any other kind of queer identity. But when you have actual academic studies
devoted to analyzing these characters through a queer lense, it's definitely something more
significant than just a popular fandom headcanon. So while I'm not going to include any LotR
characters on the list or even list every single character that can be interpreted as queer, I feel
like I should acknowledge the history behind queer readings of these characters. (And yes, me
using the variants of Frodo and Sam that partner with each other as this section’s header was
deliberate.)
Oerba Yun Fang and Oerba Dia Vanille [Final Fantasy XIII] (possibly sapphic, she/her for both)
Comments: So I’ve never played FFXIII, but I’ve been informed that these two carry heavy
sapphic undertones. While in early development, Fang’s character was male and the pair were
based on the two humans who survived Ragnarok and repopulated Midgar in Norse myth. It's
entirely possible that they just didn't change the characters’ dynamic from the original concept
when they changed Fang into a woman. Still, despite all this…no confirmation beyond heavy
queer coding.
Terra Branford [Final Fantasy VI] (possibly aromantic, she/her)
Comments: I haven't played FFVI, but I’ve been told that Terra has a major subplot where it's
mentioned she doesn't feel romantic love. Now FFVI is an old enough piece of media that I
highly doubt the writers were deliberately trying to write an aromantic character and it puts Terra
on that really ambiguous line between being aro coded and being explicitly aro. Lacking any
kind of official statements, I’m going to err on the side of her being more aro coded.
