The Joy of Life Challenge lets players try out different aspects of the game while still leaving a bit of it to their imagination for storytelling purposes. This is meant to act as an optional guide rather than you having to follow this to a T.
Feel free to skip any generations or ignore some of the 'requirements' for generations as you see fit since some do use packs. Just change the story up however you'd like.
Don't panic if you don't complete the goals, this is meant to be fun!
This challenge uses mods to create a (hopefully) unique experience for each player. All mods will be linked in their respective areas! If there's enough interest, I can try to create a version of this challenge that doesn't require mods.
No rules for you to follow - play how you want. I personally recommend avoiding using cheats whenever possible, but I'm not going to say you can't!
Here is a checklist (Google Doc) for each generation so you can mark what you’ve completed as you go! (This is a WIP, but has up to Gen 17).
- If you have the Growing Together expansion pack, I recommend keeping a 'token' of each generation inside the keepsake box that you can pass down between generations! You could also probably achieve this with any item in the game that has a storage system, or just keeping the “tokens” in your family inventory. This comes in handy in a few generations.
- Only one of the generations requires you to obtain collectibles, however, if you want to, you could complete collections that are related to each generation. Here's a list of all the collections.
Mod Suggestions
- All Worlds Residential + Venue Changes
- Relationship and Pregnancy Overhaul
- Growing Pains
This will be updated if I find more mod recommendations.
Generation One: The Baking Extraordinaire.
There was a warmth and coziness in rolling out dough, mixing up frosting, creating masterpieces with a piping bag. Most of your days are spent whipping up new creations in the kitchen, enjoying the smell of a delicious apple pie baking in the oven. You dream of having everyone know your name and saying 'Their cupcakes are the best I\'ve ever had!'.
- Aspiration: Any. Optional choice: Market Magnate.
- Traits: Foodie, roll/pick the rest. Buy the Marketable reward trait.
- Skills: Baking.
- Sell your baked goods! Whether that be through 'bake sales' in your front yard (a mod for a bake sale event here) or creating your very own bakery! You can buy a bakery building, sell from home (mod), it's up to you!
- Optional: Reach level 10 in the Baker career (mod).
- Blind dates are your best friend this generation (RPO mod or Simda)!
Alternatively, if you own the pack, the Love Struck expansion added Cupid's Corner. You MUST have a child with someone you go on a blind date with (accidental pregnancy or perhaps your sim got lucky in the romance department!). You can marry said sim if you wish, but it is not required that you get married.
- Bake something holiday-themed for each major holiday! I recommend littlebowbub\'s Grannies cookbook or Oni\'s Food Mod for more options.
- Throw the best parties for your child(ren), full of yummy cakes and treats!
Mod Recommendation:
- A-Dough-Able Cupcake Maker by RVSN
Generation Two: Chef It Up!
Growing up eating delicious baked goods was one way to spark your interest in cooking, and your parent(s) always encouraged you! Your cooking skills flourished by the time you were a teen and you had only one goal in mind: becoming a celebrity chef. You work hard to achieve that dream.
- Aspiration: Master Chef
- Traits: Ambitious, roll/pick the rest. Buy the Stoves and Grills Master reward trait.
- Skills: Cooking and Gourmet Cooking. At least level 4 in Mixology. Any required skills from career.
- Reach level 10 in the Culinary career (Chef branch), OR open a restaurant (achieve 3-star restaurant), OR become a freelance chef (mod).
- You must achieve at least a 3-star celebrity level, after all, you are a celebrity chef.
- Have a 'controversial' relationship. Either date/marry a fellow celebrity (maybe they have a bad rep?), get into a relationship with someone who works for you at your restaurant, you decide! Be creative with it.
- Throw at least 5 dinner parties throughout your life. No need to go for gold, but hey, why not?
- Create your chef\'s dream kitchen in your home. Your sim needs a beautiful place to cook!
Generation Three: Get Me Out of the Spotlight!
No matter what you did, you were always known as 'The Chef\'s Kid', it got exhausting. So when you were old enough, you ran away from home and your family to escape the spotlight. Little did you know, you were running straight into the jaws of a predator.
- Aspiration: Any of the Vampire aspirations (Vampire Family, Master Vampire, Good Vampire)
- Traits: Gloomy. When you reach young adulthood, paranoid. Roll/pick your free trait. Buy the Night Owl reward trait.
- Skills: Vampire lore, Pipe organ
- As a teen or young adult, move to Forgotten Hollow.
- Get turned into a vampire. You can pretend that your sim got bit if you have to ask to be turned. I recommend this mod for after you become a vampire so you don\'t have to deal with the annoying burning in the sun in a vampire world (like hello?)
- Fall in love with the vampire that turned you and start your own little vampy family. Have only two kids.
- In your home, have a basement/attic/secret bookshelf room where you keep your coffins and other vampire artifacts. You must also have a library where your kids can read and learn.
- Optional: Have a gothic or Victorian-inspired home, it adds to the ambience.
I highly recommend checking this list of mods for more fun with vampires (and future occult generations!)
Generation Four: In Life and In Death.
You grew up well off and had everything you could ask for and more. However, you were sheltered and hidden away from the world for most of your life. The only knowledge you had of the world was through the books in your family library, but they didn\'t tell you much. Both of your parents refused to speak of the 'real world' and told you it was too dangerous, but that if you truly wished, you were free to see it for yourself when you grew to a young adult. The one thing that kept you busy and hopeful was art and you would share your art with the world, eventually.
- Aspiration: Painter Extraordinaire
- Traits: Creative, Jealous, roll/pick for last one (I suggest Art Lover!). Buy the Creative Visionary reward trait.
- Skills: Max the Creativity skill as a child. After that, the Painting and Logic skills.
- Be homeschooled your whole life (Education Overhaul or Better Schools), or just pretend, up to you.
- As a child, create crafts on the creativity table as much as possible! You want to bring color to your gothic/victorian childhood home (if you decided to have that sort of aesthetic). Feel free to create ALL of the craftables through the creativity table!
- When you reach young adulthood, immediately move out of Forgotten Hollow into any world of your choice. You can choose to keep in contact with your vampiric family or cut them out of your life. Whatever story you want to tell.
- You can join the Painter career or just sell your paintings.
- As a young adult, you fall in love with the first Sim who shows you any sort of kindness, and for them, you cure your Vampirism in any way you can. The thought of living without them makes your insides turn.
- Have a gallery wall in your final home of paintings you\'ve made!
Generation Five: Reality Check.
Hearing the story of how your parents fell in love makes you feel sick, they obviously didn\'t understand anything about how people truly are, but you did. You weren\'t hidden away from people\'s true nature. Romance grossed you out and you wanted an escape from the romanticization of life your parents had. So when you\'re a young adult, you join the Military and leave your childhood home forever.
- Aspiration: Any.
- Traits: Unflirty, Active, roll/pick for the last. Buy both the Gym Rat and Seldom Sleepy reward traits.
- Skills: Fitness, any required skills from career.
- As soon as you become a young adult, join the Military career and move out of your family home.
- Reach level 10 in the Military career, either branch.
- Your first kid is born through an accidental pregnancy. You had no intentions of having any kids, but things happen. You decide to settle down with the other parent of the child, and eventually, you have some feelings for them (even though it\'s incredibly hard to feel that way).
- Have 3 kids total and a Distant Dynamic or Strict Dynamic with all of them (Growing Together required for that, however, you can play a bit of pretend if you do not have the pack).
Generation Six: The Burnt Out Overachiever.
You and your siblings wanted nothing more than your Military parents\' approval so you went above and beyond to try to impress them. You took on way more than any kid should have to deal with and you tried too many things at once. Eventually, you got so burnt out from trying to get the approval of a hard-ass parent that you gave up… you didn\'t really have any "big dreams", and you got a 9 to 5 job as an adult.
- Aspiration: Renaissance Sim
- Traits: Overachiever, roll/pick the rest. Buy the Savant reward trait.
- Skills: Logic, Research and Debate, any required skills from career.
- Achieve the best possible grades as a child and as a teen. Try to have your sim become Valedictorian.
- Join an after school activity as a child and as a teen (more activities here).
- Have your sim attend University for any degree - but keep in mind your sim will end up in the Business or Salaryperson career.
- Reach level 10 in the Business career (either branch) or Salaryperson career (either branch).
- Date/Marry someone you meet in University.
- Have as many kids as you\'d like.
- You have a poor relationship with your kids and significant other since all you care about now as an Adult is work.
Generation Seven: Attention, please!
Growing up with a parent who didn\'t pay much attention to you really did damage to your confidence and self-esteem, and gave you a warped perspective of what family truly means. You would do anything for their attention and you just chose the wrong way to get it. Stealing whenever you can and just causing trouble for everyone are your specialties.
- Aspiration: Public Enemy or Chief of Mischief
- Traits: Kleptomaniac, Mean, roll/pick your last one.
- Skills: Mischief, any required skills from career.
- Reach level 10 of either the Criminal career OR the Secret Agent career (Villain branch).
- You like being a menace, so get into at least 3 fights a week.
- Bind a voodoo doll to a sim and just mess with their life!
- Have 5 enemies, but fall in love with one of them (that\'s right, enemies to lovers!). Start a family with this sim, but it turns out, romance isn\'t for you! So break up/divorce them after having an affair.
- Allow your kids to visit/stay with the other parent (mod), since you\'re trying to be civil.
Generation Eight: Two-Faced Actor.
Your parent was too busy being an absolute menace to parent you correctly, but your other parent showered you with love and adoration. \'Right\' and \'Wrong\' were a foreign concept to you, was what your villainous parent doing really that bad? You couldn\'t quite understand your own brain or thought processes, so you used acting as an escape from your complicated home life. As it turns out, you\'re a bit more like your \'bad\' parent than you would have liked.
- Aspiration: Master Actor/Master Actress
- Traits: Choose two - Snob, Materialistic, or Self Absorbed. Roll/pick the free trait.
- Skills: Acting, Charisma, any required skills from career.
- Reach level 10 of the Actor career.
- As a child, join the Drama Club after school activity.
- Maintain poor relationships with your co-workers, you\'re not as friendly off-screen as you look on-screen.
- Have an accidental pregnancy with a co-worker, but keep the child a secret as you don\'t want them to ruin your career.
- Optional: Your sim goes through a healing process and slowly works to become a \"better\" person. Whether that be a process they start on their own or because of their child/significant other/fans, the choice is yours. They could, of course, be a not-so-great person forever.
Generation Nine: The Teacher.
You didn\'t have a very stable childhood - you were kept a secret and felt as if your birth was some sort of mistake. There was one thing you knew for certain: you didn\'t want any other child to feel the way you felt. You would be a better parent than yours was, and one way to help the youth was to become an educator.
- Aspiration: Super Parent or Big Happy Family.
- Traits: Family-oriented, Cheerful, roll/pick the free trait. Buy the Fertile reward trait.
- Skills: Parenting, any required skills from career.
- Reach level 10 of the Education career (either branch).
- Fall in love with a fellow teacher (play a bit of pretend here if needed) and raise a family with them!
- Have at least 3 kids and adopt at least one of them.
- Your child begs you for a pet! Adopt a cat, dog, or small animal.
Generation Ten: Living off the Land!
Life for you was always fulfilling. Your parents loved and nurtured you, let you live your life as freely as you please. - Optional: Maintain a Green eco footprint.
Generation Twelve: To Save the Oceans.
Your parents tried to be as eco-friendly as they could and you really saw their impact as you grew up. Evergreen Harbor was now truly evergreen. You wanted to follow in your parent\'s footsteps and save the world even more! Hearing about the poachers and the contamination in Sulani, you set your sights for the beach life.
- Aspiration: Beach Life.

- Throw at least 3 kava parties.

- Optional: Complete the Buried Treasure collection.
Generation Thirteen: Teenage Runaway.
Romance was always your favorite genre when it came to books and movies. You saw the way your parents looked at each other and accepted each other despite their differences… you wanted nothing more than to have your own fairytale ending for yourself. You fall in love and fall in fast with your teenage sweetheart, so much so that you run away from Sulani so that you\'re alone together. But life isn\'t as easy when you don\'t have your parents to rely on.

- Have only one kid.
Generation Fourteen: The Musical Prodigy.
You didn\'t have much growing up, your parents didn\'t make the bills all the time and you felt a sense of responsibility at a young age. As a child, you tried your best to help out around the house to ease their burden. You find a love for piano in music class and discover that you have a knack for it - you\'re a musical prodigy. "The newest in Landgraab Technologies, a Sim\'s best friend: The Servo!" has stuck with you since you saw it on TV as a child. A robot who could talk to you, cook, clean, and be your best friend? You needed it, but your parent(s) couldn\'t afford one. You decided then and there that you would make your own Servo and bots, but you needed to learn how to make them first! Your parents placed an expectation on you from a young age, you must go to University like they did. Your sibling followed their footsteps and you should too… the only problem is that you don\'t want to go to University, high school was hard enough! You quickly felt like the black sheep of your family when your goals obviously didn\'t align with your parent\'s. At least the family Servo had your back.

Generation Seventeen: The Spa-Fluencer.
You had a lot of freedom growing up and your parent never forced you to do anything you didn\'t want to. The one thing that always bothered you was your parent\'s strange collection of frogs and you quickly developed a fear of them. You spent a lot of time in your room looking up ways to tame your anxiety and found peace in meditating. You wanted to spread the power of wellness to everyone, so you created a social media account to share your love of yoga!

Life was great - your parents taught you to be yourself and be truly who you are. On your 10th birthday, you got a gift card to a clothing store you had been dreaming of getting something from. In elementary school, everyone came to you for fashion advice. In high school, you started selling fits on Trendi and became known as a fashion icon. All you wanted was to live up to your parent\'s name, and one way or another, you were going to. No matter what it took, the world would know you just as well as they did your parent. Let\'s just say the path you chose, many would shake their head in disbelief at the things you did to get where you are. Being a Politician is a shady business, but at least you have your Detective significant other to protect you.

Your politician parent acts like you don\'t exist and your detective parent reaches out whenever they\'re not saving your shitty parent\'s ass. At least you have your amazing grandparents who never make you feel ashamed or embarrassed. They take care of you as if you were their own child, but you still need to escape… you become a streamer and decide that making other people smile is something worthwhile.

Generation Twenty-Three: The StrangerVille Mystery.
Your parents never called you it, but oftentimes other people made you feel… Strange. There were times you wondered why you were different from everyone and why some people stared at you with awe? Fear? Something in between? You weren\'t sure, but if people were going to make you out to be some sort of abnormality, you were going to lean into that. You pack up your bags and make your way to StrangerVille… but you may have bit off more than you can chew.

- Have a Science Baby with someone you meet in StrangerVille, but never date or marry the Sim you have the baby with.
Generation Twenty-Four: Chill Out.
One thing was for sure, you absolutely HATED the desert. It was hot, dry, stuffy, and the way your parent talked about the Mother (whatever that was) made it all ten times worse. You needed to get out of there any way you could, so when you heard about Mt. Komorebi\'s exchange student program, you were begging to go. Finally, somewhere with normal weather and SNOW! Skiing and snowboarding seem kind of fun.
- Aspiration: Extreme Sports Enthusiast
- Traits: Adventurous, roll/pick the rest. Buy the Heatproof and Iceproof reward traits.
- Skills: Skiing, Snowboarding, Rock Climbing.
- As a teen, move out of your current household into a communal living space. You will have to most likely create a sim beforehand and pop other teens into this household. (Recommended: Control Any Sim mod, lets you have roommates).
- You must only have a part-time job this whole generation.
- Collect 10 Simmis.
- Visit your parent on Weekends only, you\'re a busy student after all.
- Date 2 Sims while you\'re in high school - this can be at the same time (if you want drama) or 2 separate occasions. You will end up marrying one of them later as a young adult!
- Have only 1 child - biological or adopted.
Generation Twenty-Five: I Demand More!
Snowboarding and skiing were not your speed, you much preferred hanging out in the living room watching the Dream Home Decorator Network. You loved seeing the transformations from drab to fab and seeing the big happy faces of the clients. You were obsessed with moving the furniture in your room around and showing your parents the \"big reveal\"! When you can, you decide to become an interior decorator and have your own big home that you can decorate however you\'d like.
- Aspiration: Mansion Baron
- Traits: Creative, roll/pick the rest.
- Skills: N/A
- Reach level 10 in the Interior Decorator career.
- Each room in your home must be a different decor type! You\'re not sure what style you like so why not have them all?
- You must attend at least 5 of the festivals in San Myshuno, inspiration always strikes when you\'re at them. This is where you meet your future spouse.
- You must spend at least 500 Simoleons a week on Build/Buy items. Your house HAS to be extravagant!
Generation Twenty-Six: The Party Animal.
A big house was the perfect place to play as a child and the perfect place to throw the best parties at as a teenager. Your parent(s) didn\'t seem to mind you throwing the noisiest parties and making a mess of the place, so you were never told to stop. This became a lifestyle as you got older, you constantly needed social interaction. You want to be the life of the party.
- Aspiration: Live Fast as a Teen, Party Animal as a Young Adult+
- Traits: Outgoing, Party Animal, Dance Machine.
- Skills: Dancing, DJ Mixing
- You stay with your parents this whole generation, where else are you going to have your parties?
- Have a club of your closest friends and have gatherings at least 2 times a week.
- Go to a Nightclub venue at least 3 times a week.
- Date, but never marry someone you meet at a Nightclub. Have as many kids as you\'d like with them.
Generation Twenty-Seven: The Romance Connoisseur.
