Hello, STATS 213 coordinators,

We, the STAT 213 students, are writing to express concerns regarding the midterm that took place

on October 28th, 2025. With this letter, we hope to address multiple points of apprehension about

the exam format, its content, as well as how we were prepared to take it.

The first, and primary concern is the content of the midterm. The majority of us had thoroughly

studied the practice problems we had been provided by our instructors, and felt blindsided, to say the

least, by the material on the midterm. The questions did not resemble the vast majority of what we

studied or anything we covered in class. We felt as though the questions didn’t resemble any of the

concepts given to us in assignments or the other worksheets, leading to many of us feeling

unprepared despite the high level of studying done. There was not ample practice material provided

by our professors outside of in-class notes, leading to many students requiring outside study guides.

Students have also expressed the concern that the midterm practice questions were released quite

late, and some students claim they didn’t even get access to them at all.

Secondly, there was also a concern with miscommunication about what the midterm would be

focused on. There was a strong emphasis that the midterm would primarily be on units 1.1-1.3, with

a small number of questions covering 2.0-2.2. However, most students would argue that there was a

lot more content on 2.0 and later than implied. Alongside that, students felt that there was content in

the course that they were expecting, but never showed up on the test. For example, a multitude of

students stated they didn’t see any questions covering the concepts of Unit 1.2, which was a huge

part of our 1.0 unit. Lastly, there was a heavy implication that we had to memorize R codes to

complete certain questions, yet there weren’t any featured on the exam.

Finally, the existence of an undeniable advantage given to students writing the midterm online, and

how it was unfair. We feel that all of us should be taking the exam either online or in person to give

all students in the STAT 213 course the same environment, standards, and level playing field,

regardless of which lecture they are in. Furthermore, we believe it is most fair to separate the grading

curve for students who took the exam online versus in person, as each group faced different testing

conditions.

We appreciate the measures taken to help alleviate the stress of this midterm; however, we feel that

going forward, certain adjustments to the setup of the exam could allow for a better result. We

believe it would be beneficial if all the lectures had the same access to the material on D2L, so no

particular lecture has more practice material than another. In addition, we feel it would be valuable if

all students, regardless of their lectures, had the same style of exam environment, whether at home

or online. We also believe the removal of the “C” grade cap is important, as it negates the efforts put

into the lab quizzes and assignments and severely limits us from succeeding in this course.
