Preface from the Author
Hello. My name is Syltphademus. I have no particular accomplishments to my name other than a
massive amount of free time and a crippling need to do math calculations in Google Sheets. Given
the lack of any real endgame guides so far, I chose to make this for myself and then share it when
e enough people asked for it.
Many of you may have seen the old guide. It was kind of a mess. This is my attempt to rectify that. If
you have any feedback, please reach out to me on Discord or through the Monster Hunter Gathering
Hall’s Lance channel. I’m generally available to answer any questions as well.
And if it wasn’t obvious, SPOILERS AHEAD
1. Build Guide Assumptions
All Sets listed below assume that players have a general understanding of how to play Lance and
relative matchup knowledge. It also assumes the player has reached HR 41 and unlocked all
available monsters to hunt. It does not take into account speedrunning or deliberately abusing
certain mechanics in order to achieve better damage or uptime on skills.
Due to the nature of Wilds’ skill system, this guide will be split between Armor and Weapons. All
weapons can go with any armor set, and any exceptions will be noted.
1.1 Skill Priority
1
Offensive Guard
(OFG) 3
You will trigger this all the time and is mandatory in any Lance build.
1
Master’s Touch
(MT)/Razor Sharp
(RS) 3
Lance chews through sharpness pretty quickly and one of these two skills is
mandatory. The general consensus is that at ~70% affinity, Master’s Touch
surpasses Razor Sharp
1* Critical Boost (CB)
Both are modifiers to something we will be doing a lot. Which one is better
depends on the monster and your weapon. Please see matchup chart at the
1* bottom for which to run
Critical Element (Crit
Ele)
2
Element Attack (Ele
Atk)
Only listed at 2 because we do run status on some matchups. Generally you
will get Ele Atk from the secondary roll on your decorations. OFG, RS, and Crit
Ele can all have Ele Atk secondary. MT and CB cannot.
5 Guard
Because Capcom made this a weapon skill, you are generally giving up
damage to run this skill. Can be rolled as a secondary modifier like Ele Atk.
There are some matchups where having one level of Guard allows you to
punish an attack, but it is extremely specific and beyond the scope of this
guide.
10 Guard Up See Guard, except with even less applications.. Can also roll secondary
Fig. 1.1A - Offensive weapon skill priority
Given how weapon skills work, you will only be able to have at max 12 ‘points’ worth of skills on a
weapon. Any non-Artian weapon will automatically have less. Using any non-combination decoration
(CB, MT) will mean you use less. You can mix and match to your comfort. Anything listed in the
pictures below will be considered a theoretical maximum, not necessarily what is best given the fight
you are doing and your skill level.
1
Weakness Exploit
(WEX)
These skills have one thing in common: Affinity from armor. As such, you want
to stack as much as possible
1
Maximum Might
(MM) 3
1
Gore Magala’s
Tyranny (2 pc) +
Antivirus 3
1 Agitator (Agi)
1 Burst 1 Extremely efficient skill at one point (being worth almost half the value by itself).
Lance has extremely solid uptime due to how we play
2
Gore Magala’s
Tyranny (4 pc)
A solid 10 raw before clearing Frenzy and 15 after, this is a pretty significant
damage increase at this point in time.
2 Coalescence (Coal) Very good with element, which we also enjoy. Not as great if running status
3 Burst 2-5
While Burst is an amazing skill, almost half of its potency comes from the first
point. If you have spare slots in your armor, you can fit in extra points of Burst,
but it’s extremely low priority
*
Fulgur Anjanath’s Will (2 pc)
While neither of these add to damage, because of how Lance works we pretty
much require Fulgur 2 pc to keep Maximum Might uptime. Constitution comes
for free on our meta set and can help to keep Maximum Might, indirectly being
Con
titution (Con)
Fig. 1.1B - Offensive armor skill priority
While these are listed in general priority order, the reality is that these are generally the only skills
worth using. While there are some conditional skills like Resentment and Peak Performance that may
give a higher amount, given how Lance plays we can’t maintain a solid uptime on either without
sacrificing something else.
2. Meta Weapon Guide
2.1 A Note on Weapons
If you saw the first image in this guide or have reached endgame, you’ve probably realized that the
Artian weapon system is the (current) endgame grind and best weapon in the game. Thanks to its
customizable nature and decoration slots, the Artian weapon can just fit more into its budget than
any other weapon can. Also due to this customizable nature, if you prefer some differences over the
pictured weapon, please feel free to go for. Extra affinity to have guaranteed crits, extra sharpness,
whatever makes you more comfortable is going to be best.
There are several resources online that explain how to go about acquiring an Artian weapon, how to
reinforce it, how the seeds work, and everything else under the sun. This guide will only show the two
‘best’ Artian weapons for element and status. There is no ‘pure’ raw option as a status Lance and a
‘pure raw’ Lance have the same raw, so there is no reason not to run status.
This guide will also include a few crafted weapons for people who do not care for Artian or just want
something else to look at until Capcom adds Layered Weapons. It is not a comprehensive list nor
does it take matchups into account.
2.2 Artian Weapons
Fig 2.2A - Element Artian
General template for element lances, replace Fire and Blaze with whatever element you are trying to
create. Artian weapons can reach absolutely massive element values thanks to the reinforcement
system. One sharpness is mandatory thanks to the low base white, but since you can only get four
element rolls anyway, it’s perfectly fine.
In general, the difference between 4 element and 4 attack boosts is pretty negligible.
Fig 2.2B - Blast Artian
General template for status lance. If you like to live dangerously you could spend all of your saved up
luck for five attack rolls, but one sharp roll is not only easier to hit, but going to overall just be more
useful.
2.3 Crafted Weapons
On the whole, crafted weapons are going to be worse than perfectly rolled Artian weapons. If you are
lacking in good decorations or just don’t want to spend half your playtime menuing, then these three
weapons are the ones I would choose as the ‘best’ crafted weapons.
Fig 2.3A - Zoh Shia Lance
The Lance that may or may not dethrone G Rathalos as king of crafted. At first glance, it just looks like
a worse Artian lance, but that unique skill is something else. Whiteflame Torrent basically adds 50 extra damage every 6-10 seconds, which sounds like a lot, but averages out to being on par with
Critical Boost, except on a weapon with worse stats than even partially rolled Artian weapons. You
can run MT, but I like the extra option from OFG or Razor Sharp.
On low HZV monsters (Arkveld, Jin Dahaad where you’re just spamming the legs), this extra damage
is more useful, but because the math is very awkward, it remains to be seen whether this Lance will
have a place in the overall meta or just a crafted alternative.
Extremely pretty, though
Fig 2.3B - G Rathalos Lance
Hands down the best crafted lance thanks to innate Master’s Touch Zoh Shia says hi. This is the only
lance that gets 4 ‘points’ worth of skills baseline (MT counting as 3 points). Critical Element is
somewhat wasted with the low element, and your skills are very much locked into OFG and CB.
Thanks to the baseline crit, you should sit at 100% with all buffs running using FulGore.
Fig 2.3C - G Ebony Odogaron Lance
Built in OFG and having solid stats all around. No longer my personal favorite looking weapon thanks
to Zoh Shia 🙁.
Fig 2.3D - Lala Barina Lance
By no means great, this weapon procs paralysis fairly consistently thanks to its inflated status while
having insanely high base sharpness, letting you get away with not investing into sharpness skills.
Only recommended as a good entry weapon into beginning your endgame grind until you can make
something better like G Rath.
3. Meta Armor Guide
The following sets are ordered from strongest to weakest. They do not assume any consumable buffs,
food buffs, or mantles due to their inconsistent nature with resetting and the annoyance of farming
them.
As stated in the assumptions, the baseline for these guides is HR 41. Due to the need to deco and
Artian part grind, it will likely be a bit longer until your build fully comes online. However these armor
sets are usable as soon as you can acquire them and don’t need a specific skill maxed in order to be
used.
3.1 Four Gore aka Forgor
Fig 3.1 - Forgor
The prince has grown up to become king. Thanks to the hyper efficient Zoh Shia chest, we can now fit
all the skills we had in FulGore and tack the Gore Magala 4 pc bonus to it. This is better than FulGore
at 60% MM uptime only goes up from there,, so unless you really like to Power Guard out of fear, this
will be your best set moving into Arch Tempered Rey Dau in the future.
MM had a slight change with the TU that made it so you have about 3 seconds after consuming
stamina before you lose the buff. If you reach full stamina again, you will reset this time, making it
fairly consistent to keep up even with our stamina draining attacks.
3.2 FulGore
Figure 3.2 - Fulgore
Although it may have been dethroned as the best overall set, FulGore still competes with Forgor. If
you’re struggling with MM uptime or like the stamina comfiness that Fulgur provides, this set will still
do a lot for you. The better you get at MM uptime, the worse this set gets compared to Forgor though.
3.3 ZohGore
Figure 3.3 - ZohGore
A pretty comfy set that’s within a percentage of Forgor. Provides ‘super recovery’ thanks to Zoh Shia 2
pc set bonus and has higher base raw at the cost of less affinity. Like Forgor, requires some MM
management, but at 50% uptime will hang pretty well. Within 1-2% of the above builds. Will also be
more flexible thanks to extra 1 slots. Recommendations are Divine Blessing (defense), Constitution
(easier stamina uptime), Recovery Up (Zoh set boost), and/or Shockproof (multiplayer)
4. Alternative Sets
4.1 Zoh Shizu
Fig 4.1 - Zoh Shizu
If you really hate healing yourself or chip damage from Power Guard, this set is for you. Still has a
decent chunk of skills that put it around 5-6% within the meta stuff.
5. I’ve Been Away, What’s Changed?
5.1 Title Update 1
So TU 1 has come, bringing Mizutsune and Zoh Shia into the roster. Mizu mostly has nothing going
for us aside from some interesting legs, but Zoh Shia has shaken things up both for comfy and meta.
The Lance is in contention for Best Crafted Lance and the armor is hyper efficient, allowing us to do
the same thing we’ve been doing but with more skills or set bonuses. Key takeaways:
- Grab the Mizu legs and ignore everything else.
- Zoh chest is extremely good, Zoh waist and head are also good
- Zoh arms are better than Zoh legs if you’re trying to get 4 set
- Zoh Lance may have some matchups, but the unique skill is very difficult to math.
For how Lance changed as a whole, Corrupted Mantle was nerfed. It’s still a damage boost, just not
absolutely dominating like it used to be. Our Focus Strike got buffed so that the monster stays in
place when we use it, and the wound won’t pop early and make us lose a bunch of damage. It’s worth
using, but not a ‘you MUST use it’ like it is for Insect Glaive.
6. Meta Matchup Chart
In the following matchup chart, you will see ‘Crit Boost’ or ‘Crit Ele’. This means that swapping
between the two decorations will result in more damage. It is perfectly fine to stick to just Crit Boost if
you don’t want to swap decorations or make multiple loadouts of the same element.

7. FAQs
Q: “What’s the best lance that’s not Artian?”
A: Whichever one you think is prettiest. Or go read the crafted weapons part.
Q: “How does Whiteflame Torrent work?”
A: Go watch DreamingSuntide’s video here, he explains it better than I can. Only certain moves can
proc the effect, and for Lance so far we believe it’s Mid and High Thrust, Wide Sweep, Leaping
Thrust, Twin Finishing Thrust (off of Dash Attack), and Grand Retribution Thrust. This will be updated
as more information is found out.
Q: “Zoh Shia is hard.”
A: You all said this game was easy. Also either hug his tail or slot in Guard Up, but yeah it’s a rough
fight for Lance.
Q: “What about Mizu Lance?”
A: Mizu Lance requires you to either be fighting Mizu (and get hit…) or wear Mizu 4 pc to proc
Bubbleblight. Mizu armor is not remotely good enough on average to make up for all of the other skills
you’re missing out on. For reference, Mizu Lance which requires 4 pieces and the lance itself has the
same amount of affinity as MM 3. Yeah….
