SAED Matchups
Feel free to use Bloody Heart instead of Elembane for matchups where it is difficult
to SAED elembane hitzones (Mizu, Aknosom, Auroracanth, etc.)
SAED Builds
Skill Priority
- Guard 5 — Mandatory: 5 levels of Guard allows you to take low or medium knockback for most monster attacks. This is required to safely SAED these moves.
- Load Shells 2 — Mandatory: Allows you to load 5 phials from yellow charge instead of red, which is essential for unloading more SAEDs on the monster.
- Rapid Morph 3 — Mandatory: Rapid Morph speeds up the morphing animation significantly, which allows for faster recovery after an SAED, which is required to safely SAED many monster attacks.
- Element Attack 5 — S: Most of the damage for SAED comes from element. Element Attack is a very cheap 20% boost to base element.
- Teostra / Kushala Blessing 2 — S: 10% base element for Fire, Water, and Ice.
- Dragon Conversion 3 — S: Dragon Conversion gives a huge element boost, and element gives big damage (we like damage).
- Furious 3 — S: Gives +20 to all ele res on Red Scroll, which increases the element gain from Dragon Conversion.
- Dereliction + Strife 3 — A: Gives a good amount of element, if you can deal with the health drain.
- Blood Awakening 3 + Bloodrite — A: Gives similar levels of element as derestrife and is more comfortable to use, but has less uptime.
- Element Exploit 1 — A: Once again, most of the damage from SAED comes from element, so a 10% boost is very strong.
- Frostcraft 3 — A: If you can play around Frostcraft, a 20/30% boost to total damage is huge.
- Burst 1 — B: Gives free element for attacking the monster.
- Element Exploit 2-3 — B: Gives 12.5-15% element.
- Burst 3 — B: 5 more element from Burst 1.
- Bloodlust 1 — C: Gives small flat element when uncured, but the main use of this skill is for a free heal when using Dereliction. Not very useful for Blood Awakening builds.
- Element Resistance 3 — C: Each large ele res deco gives 4 element.
- Defense Boost 6 — C: Gives 6.25 element.
- Guard Up 1 — Situational: Guard Up 1 allows you to block certain attacks that are normally unguardable. While not needed for all monsters, it can prove very useful in some matchups.
- Intrepid Heart 1 — Comfort: Allows you to tank a single hit with no knockback when active, which can allow for a safe SAED on certain attacks.
- Shockproof / Flinch Free 1 — Comfort: Getting flinched in multiplayer sucks lol
Disclaimer: The following builds are assuming solo play, which is why they have Embolden. Feel free to drop Embolden for Guard if playing multiplayer, and add more Guard as needed by dropping low priority skills such as Coal, Burst/Element Exploit past lvl1, Attack Boost (as long as it stays above 4), etc.
- Embolden 2 (Guard 3) is used as a baseline for the ele CSS builds. Feel free to add more based on preference, or just learn which moves to dodge instead of guard.
Augments
- Crawling Crusher (Fire) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele
- Dear Lutemineva+ (Fire) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele

CSS Matchups
- Almudron, Barioth, and Gore Magala are Kaktusemolgia matchups.
CSS Builds
Skill Priority
- Guard 3 / Embolden 2 — Mandatory: 3 levels of Guard or Embolden 2 allows you to take low or medium knockback for most monster attacks with Ready Stance. Required to maintain ED2 loop.
- Weakness Exploit 3 — S: Most of the damage of CSS comes from crit. Weakness Exploit is the most efficient way to increase crit chance, and you should be aiming for good hitzones anyways.
- Critical Boost 3 — S: Increases crit damage.
- Offensive Guard 3 — S: Huge raw boost with nearly 100% uptime with Ready Stance.
- Handicraft + Master’s Touch 3 — A: CSS uses a good amount of sharpness, so maintaining it is important.
- Blood Awakening 3 + Blood Rite — A: Large raw and element boost when healing from bloodrite or bloodblight.
- Heaven Sent 3 — A: Infinite sharpness and stamina (enables Max Might)
- Mail of Hellfire 3 — A: Large raw or element boost depending on scroll.
- Element Attack 5 — A: A large portion of damage is elemental for CSS.
- Teostra / Kushala Blessing 2 — A: Cheap 10% base element for Fire, Water, and Ice.
- Bloodlust, Max Might, and Critical Eye — A: Used with Weakness Exploit to reach 100% crit.
- Powder Mantle 1 — A: Builds up quickly with CSS for free damage.
- Element Exploit 1 — A: 10% Element for a single point.
- Burst 1 — A: Gives free raw and element for attacking the monster.
- Wind Mantle 1 — A: Allows infinite Ready Stance and ED2 chaining.
- Critical Element 1-3 — A: 5-15% element boost on a crit.
- Buildup Boost 1-3 — A: Large raw damage boost for status builds.
- Attack Boost 4-7 — B: Large raw boost, but hard to fit all levels.
- Status Trigger / Adrenaline Rush — B: Useful for raw evasion builds.
- Element Exploit 2-3 — C: Small element increase, only worth it if you can fit.
- Burst 2-3 — C: Small raw and element increase, same as above.
- Frenzied Bloodlust — C: An extra wirebug is useful, but not really worth investing over other skills.
- Shockproof / Flinch Free 1 — Comfort: Getting flinched in multiplayer sucks.
Disclaimer: The following CSS builds assume solo play; Embolden is included as a baseline for CSS builds. If multiplayer, drop Embolden for Guard and adjust other skills accordingly.
- Heaven-Sent / Nunki’s Asterism (Poison) — Augments: 6 atk + rampage slot
- Vengeful Broadfeller (Blast) — Augments: 8 atk
- Feel free to drop Coalescence for another level of Status Trigger if you feel uptime is too low.
- Crawling Crusher (Fire) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele
- Kaktusemolgia (Fire) — Dear Lutemineva+ (Fire) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele
- Armordraad (Water) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele
- Asylum Peal (Thunder) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele OR 6 ele + rampage slot
- Flicker Blizzard Wail (Ice) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele
- Silver Splitter (Dragon) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele
- Dragonheart — Dragonheart Fire builds vary; DH bonus applies if maintained.
- For Bazelgeuse, Kushala, and Risen Kushala, drop Element Exploit to lvl1 and add Attack Boost lvl7 + Coalescence lvl1.
- For Zinogre and Apex Zinogre, drop Element Exploit lvl3 for Attack Boost lvl7 and Coalescence lvl1.
- Blood Awakening
- Nunki’s Asterism (Poison) — Augments: 6 atk + rampage slot
- Vengeful Broadfeller (Blast) — Augments: 8 atk
- Crawling Crusher (Fire) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele
- Kaktusemolgia (Fire) — Dear Lutemineva+ (Fire) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele
- Armordraad (Water) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele
- Asylum Peal (Thunder) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele
- For Bazelgeuse, Kushala, and Risen Kushala, drop Element Exploit to lvl1 and increase Critical Eye to lvl6 for more consistent affinity.
- Flicker Blizzard Wail (Ice) — Augments: 2 atk 8 ele
- For Zinogre and Apex Zinogre, drop Element Exploit lvl3 for Burst lvl3 and Coalescence lvl1.
- Silver Splitter (Dragon)
- Dragonheart
- Crimson Mechwing
- Silver Splitter
- Dango: Because Dragon Conversion converts element resistance into element attack, it is recommended to eat for ele res dango for the non-Dragonheart SAED builds. To choose the right dango, go to the training room and swap to Blue Scroll and check status in order to see your element resistances. Use hopping skewers and eat the lowest ele res dango first, followed by the next 2 lowest resistances.
- Also, if you are unable to fit Shockproof or Flinch Free into your set, it may be worth eating for Dango Feet 1 when playing multiplayer as flinches interrupt important animations for CB.
ex: the lowest element resistance is dragon, followed by fire, then thunder - this means I would eat for Dragon Res 4, Fire Res 3, and Thunder Res 1.
FAQs
1. Why are SAED and CSS builds separated?
This is because the playstyle and damage type are very different. They require different skills to function properly, and while SAED focuses purely on elemental damage, CSS needs affinity and sharpness. While it is possible to swap between both during a hunt, it is not nearly as effective as sticking to one.
2. Why is it recommended to upgrade the rampage slot for Thunder and Ice CBs?
Most of the damage from SAED is elemental. Because of this, upgrading in order to slot elembane on Narwa and Auroracanth CB will increase the overall damage. This is not the case for CSS. However, Bloody Heart can be used on SAED matchups where it is hard to target elembane hitzones. (only works for monsters that give bloodblight)
3. Why are there no Berserk builds?
While Berserk is a viable alternative for both SAED and CSS, it is expensive to build for and therefore not included. If you need help making a Berserk build, feel free to ask in #charge_blade for any questions.
4. Which Switch Skills should I use?
There is a section on Switch Skills in the progression guide.
5. Which scroll should I use?
Dragon Conversion builds will always use Red. MoH builds will use Red for raw matchups, and Blue for element matchups.
6. Is it worth building up element resistance on Blue Scroll for Dragon Conversion?
Most of the time, no. The element increase is small and not worth wasting time on Blue Scroll. However, for multi monster quests that share the same elemental weakness, it can be worthwhile.
7. Should I use the Derestrife or Blood Awakening builds for SAED?
This is up to preference. While Derestrife is stronger, the constant health drain may be difficult to deal with. Blood Awakening builds use Bloodrite for lifesteal, so they are more comfortable to play.
8. Should I use Heaven Sent or Blood Awakening builds for CSS?
Blood Awakening is generally stronger, and should be used over Heaven Sent in most cases. However, there are some matchups where getting a partbreak for Bloodrite can be difficult, or locked behind a HP threshold. For these, Heaven Sent should be used.

Armor and Skill Replacements
- If you don’t want to rely on Frostcraft, you can replace Frostcraft augments with other skills such as Guard Up, Burst, Embolden, or element resistances.
- For the Blood Awakening variant, some players replace the emblems with different augments to tweak uptime.
- For the Dragon-based builds, some players reduce element exploration in favor of raw or critical boosts depending on the monster.
