Crystal Legacy by TSP
Crystal Legacy
This is a Pokemon Rom Hack made by TheSmithPlays with the intended purpose of fixing
Pokemon Crystal into a more polished, balanced, and overall engaging Crystal experience.
Generation 2 is one of the most beloved sets of games in the franchise. It introduced tons of
mechanics to the game that ended up becoming mainstays within the franchise even now. It
also had fan favorite Pokemon, a diverse region, deep lore, nonlinearity, and an entire separate
region as its postgame which allowed the player to rematch characters from Generation 1. This
created an intoxicating and memorable experience that is still remembered by fans today.
Unfortunately, it seems that for every good decision Gen 2 saw, there was a mistake made too,
and this is why it sees a lot of criticism. Most often, players critique Gen 2 for failing in its
representation of its own region’s Pokemon, its inconsistent level curve and a lackluster
postgame. Furthermore, terrible learnsets inhibit the vast majority of Pokemon and questionable
design choices make diverse party building incredibly difficult. It’s also been criticized for
having a poorly written villainous group storyline with no enjoyable payoff. Ultimately, these and
many other small features lead to this trio of games feeling incredibly underbaked, much to the
dismay of its fans. Feeling as if it could be so much more, TSP (TheSmithPlays) set out to fix
this game, and to turn it into the best possible version of itself, while still retaining the iconic
Pokemon Crystal feel that fans have come to love.
Fixes and/or adjustments in this rom hack will include the following: moves, learnsets for
Pokemon, wild Pokemon locations, the Team Rocket storyline, the rival’s team & their storyline,
teams on both normal trainers, Gym Leaders, Elite Four, and other bosses. In addition it comes
with many quality of life features that weren’t possible or weren’t considered when the games
first came out.
Huge thanks to TSP for leading the project, JaaShooUhh the admin of the discord server during
development, Craig the programmer helping Smith (TSP), Weebra the Editor for SmithPlays
Pokemon, The mod team Regi, Aero, Daily, Zach, and the Testers for the game, Tiberius, Disq,
Sable, Niftimo, Tavros, Karlos, Reader Dragon, Isona, Obelisk, BriceMCK, and Half1sch. Most of
all Thanks to all of the fans who are supporting the project through the video series, the
discord, and youtube community.
We would also like to credit & thank Katt, Chamber, Soloo993, Blue Emerald, Lake, Neslug, Tom
Wang, Seasick, & Pikachu25 for the several amazing custom sprites used in the hack. Nayru62

Team Rocket
Team Rocket
Team Rocket has had many changes to make it a more threatening and cohesive Villain Group. The
teams have been varied throughout the group to reflect their actions of stealing pokemon. In addition to
revamping the Executives we have added an extra Grunt with a special story to follow along with
through the experience named Eto (Hyuck-Hyuck-Hyuck). Below I will list the Teams of the Executives.
Story elements will not be spoiled here outside the team compositions. Outside that you're just gonna
have to experience it on your own and enjoy.

All changes to the E4 were made to make it one of the most challenging experiences of the
game. This is the Final Boss Battle of Johto so it should reflect that. Teams were given unique
identities featuring pokemon from Johto or that haven’t had a spotlight yet.
Lance explains that Red has left him in charge of the League and in care of one of the
Legendary Birds, Zapdos. There is more to the explanation but you are gonna have to play to
see it.

Trainer Document
Trainers
Crystal Legacy Trainer Documentation: Version #1.3 Crystal Legacy Major Battle Documentation
Trainers in this Rom Hack have received tons of changes to make teams more interesting and viable.
Things like Pokemon Available nearby, Trainer Class, EXP provided, and just interest were added to
these fights. Our goal is to make it so that you don’t just steamroll the whole game now you have to pay
attention in case that opponent has a pokemon with good moves.
Pokemon were added to teams either to reflect their trainer class or the pokemon you could catch on
the route. This helps players see what rare pokemon might be hidden on the route around you. For
Example these 2 hikers in Union Cave both have pokemon that are found in the cave. In addition one of
them has the rare pokemon Cubone to hint at its new location.
Pokemon were added to teams as well later in the game solely to progress the difficulty and allow the
player with more exp before moving on to more challenging fights. For example the teams in the early
parts of the games have 1-3 pokemon. Towards the end part of the game teams can go anywhere
between 2-5. See examples of teams found in early and late game.
Finally, Teams are also added with just
challenge in mind. Every once in a while you’re gonna run into a trainer who has a pretty challenging
Pokemon or team. This is best exemplified by the trainers on the route before Victory Road. These are
trainers who have beaten the 8 gyms of Johto assumedly because they got past the waterfall. They are
preparing for the Elite 4 challenge and you the player have to fight them. See below a couple of
examples of teams from this area.
If you want to see a list of all of these trainers and their pokemon for research purposes or for info
during a nuzlocke please look at the files below the title of this section. The document listed above by
Regi from the Mod Team is a list of every trainer and their respective teams throughout the entire game,
that he updates regularly every Playtest & Release Version.
