Class Overview & Boss Mule Viability
Illium is a damage-per-minute (DPM) oriented class with a unique micromanagement twist in the form of Crystal Battery , which acts as a gauge.
Illium has one of the best mobility in the game with teleport (and extended teleport), flight, float, access to portals (Crystal Gate), and up jump. It also provides one of the best party utilities: a 6.5-second party-wide iframe (Crystalline Bulwark).
In terms of difficulty, Illium falls into mid-tier – not quite as simplistic as Bowmaster and Dawn Warrior, but not quite as hard as Cadena, Khali, and Blaster. However, keeping uptime on Illium is absolutely essential in playing the class compared to many other classes. Every second spent not charging is a lot of damage lost!
As a boss mule, Illium does exceptionally well, being able to ignore a lot of early game boss mechanics with its mobility and survivability (flying, 2 iframes, and healing). However, rolling Attack Speed +1 inner ability may require decent funding.
We always encourage people to try out the class first. Getting to 200 and unlocking 5th job will give you a preview of Illium’s capabilities, but we know that the ball (Crystal) mechanic can be a turnoff to some. If you find that you enjoy Illium, it makes for a great main or boss mule!
Pros and Cons
PROS
● Best and most versatile form of mobility in the form of flight that we can use briefly off-burst, and for the entirety of our burst rotation. ○ Flight also allows us to avoid and bypass many boss mechanics , including Damien’s blue orbs and Gloom’s suctioning laser. ● Illium’s Crystal Battery, Crystal Gates, and now Sol Janus give it some of the laziest, yet highest rates when it comes to farming. ○ Wings of Glory acts as a built-in loot timer that provides free flight and easy looting for 20 seconds. ● In a party scenario, Illium offers 3 major party-wide buffs: ● A 6.5-second iframe ● +46 Attack and Magic Attack ● 10% heal per second
CONS
● Illium requires a lot of inputs in order to function correctly. In general, Flora classes require micromanagement due to their gauges. ○ Ex: To continue attacking a moving boss, there is a 3-button sequence that you need to perform: Deploy Crystal, Radiant Javelin, Teleport. This needs to be done quickly and repeatedly during the entire boss fight. ● Playing Illium properly and efficiently requires practice. This isn’t a “one-button” class and may be really challenging for newer Illiums to learn. As you progress into more difficult bosses, you’ll find that you’ll need to learn different playstyles to deal damage and survive. ● Illium also requires low ping. Having higher ping can result in up to 10 FD loss, due to delays in Crystal movement and Javelins. ExitLag is highly recommended for those not living on the US west coast. ● There are some bugs. Like all classes, Illium has some bugs. However, none of ours are very bad if they do happen. The largest issue would be Crystalline Bulwark (party iframe) not lasting the full 10 seconds due to a bug with Lucent Brand stacks sometimes not carrying over.
Crystal Battery (Gauge)
Illium’s Crystal Battery is a gauge and management of the Crystal is what sets its playstyle apart from other classes. This skill is given at 2nd job advancement, which then forms the very core of your gameplay. Crystal automatically charges over time (5 charges/sec → 30s to full charge).
You’ll learn more as you read this guide, but below are some basic notes to remember about the Crystal. These skills will be elaborated further in the next section, Skill Overview.
Deploy Crystal is the skill to summon and control movement of the Crystal.
Using this skill by default will move the Crystal a set distance in front of you.
After moving a certain distance from the Crystal, it will teleport on top of you.
Radiant Javelin and Radiant Orb are your main attacks that will interact with the crystal to create what are called ‘’reactions’’.
Orb always goes towards the Crystal no matter the direction you face.
Longinus Spear is the only skill that will give charge to the Crystal.
Spear always goes towards the Crystal no matter the direction you face.
Skill Overview
Notable Skills (through 4th Job Advancement)
The table below points out notable skills all the way through 4th job advancement and provides a brief description for each one. Some skills were left out for simplicity’s sake. We advise reading the in-game skill descriptions to properly understand each skill.
Skills highlighted in yellow have party utility.
Crystal Skills require a certain amount of charges on the Crystal Battery before activating. Using Crystal Skills does not consume charges, but once used, cannot be used again until the Crystal Battery resets.
Skill Type Notes
Deploy Crystal Summon
Skill to control Crystal movement.
Hold skill + UP = move Crystal directly on top of you
Hold skill + DOWN = teleports Crystal to set distance in front of you

Longinus Spear Attack
Long range attack that gives the Crystal 15 charges. Goes towards the Crystal no matter the direction you face, this is now our main form of charging our crystal outside of its passive charge.
Low Usage Skills (through 4th Job Advancement)
There are a few skills that we don’t use often, mainly due to their minimal damage. These include:
Skill Purpose Notes
Crystal Skill Vortex of Light Attack^ Spinning/windmill-like attack.
Crystal Skill Vortex Wings Attack
Can be used once every Wings.
Useful to level up in V-Matrix to unlock Mortal Wingbeat (upgraded version) in 6th job.
Ultimately, it is up to you whether or not you use these skills!
If you’d like to understand how gameplay works with these skills, jump to How to DPS as Illium.
Hyper Skill Passives
We boost Radiant Javelin as much as physically possible, Longinus Spear is now the skill we use to charge our ball faster so we take ‘Longinus Cooldown Cutter’ and Deus is a good chunk of our damage so boosting him as well is massively beneficial.
Javelin Reinforce
Javelin Extra Strike
Javelin Boss Rush
Longinus Cooldown Cutter
Deus Extra Strike
Inner Ability (IA)
If you’re unfamiliar with Inner Ability, it may help to watch a guide. There are a few different YouTube videos out there. Here’s one by Muncheezlol you can reference: [Maplestory] How I would Start building Inner Ability Beginners tips for Maplestory 2025
Bossing IA
Illium’s ideal bossing inner ability is:
Attack Speed +1 Level
Boss Damage: +10%
10% Chance to skip cooldowns
The reason for the change to % CD skip from +% Damage to targets afflicted by abnormal status is because of a higher chance to skip Flash Crystal Battery, Longinus Spear and Reactions.
Can I skip Attack Speed +1 (AS+1)?
Unfortunately, no. We are quite possibly the class that benefits the most from AS+1 in GMS. We need AS+1 to reach the cap (AS10) as follows:
Source Value Resulting Attack Speed
Base Attack Speed +4 4
Wisdom of the Crystal +1 5
Gauntlet Frenzy +2 7
Decent Speed Infusion +1 8 (soft cap)
Extreme Green Potion +1, breaks the soft cap 9
IA Attack Speed +1 Inner Ability +1 10
Attack speed still affects how fast we throw Javelins, which will affect our overall damage. Unless Illium becomes a hurricane class, we will always need AS+1.
Alternative Bossing IA Lines (not optimal, only to settle)
Attack Speed +1 Level
Boss Damage: +10%
+8% damage when attacking targets afflicted with Abnormal status
Other Unique lines you can settle for:
Buff Skill Duration: (32-38)%
Magic Attack: +(15-21)
Mobbing IA
With Crystal Gate , we can farm extremely easily in almost every map. It is recommended to run Meso Obtained % or Item Drop Rate % as the Legendary line. We no longer need to run ‘Number of Enemies hit by multi-target skill: +1’ now that this is accessible through Legion Artifact (EXP).
Meso Obtained: +(18-20)% Item Drop Rate: +(18-20)%
Item Drop Rate: +(13-15)% Meso Obtained: +(13-15)%
(7-8)% damage to Normal Monsters (7-8)% damage to Normal Monsters
The third line is flexible so just choose what you think is best!
Rolling the Perfect IA
The most efficient strategy for rolling and optimizing your IA is to do the following:
1. Roll for the second line first (Unique). Aim for Boss Damage, Damage to Abnormal status %, Buff Skill Duration, or % Chance to Skip Cooldowns. Once achieved, lock the line.
2. Then start rolling for the Attack Speed +1 Legendary line. Lock it once achieved.
3. Then find a third line worth settling for and be happy!
You can always consider using Miracle Circulators, however Attack Speed +1 is so important for Illium that it’s vital you get this ASAP.
If you do not play Reboot, rolling with Circulators can get very expensive, so you might want to roll exclusively with Honor, outside event-given Circulators.
Equipment
Secondary Weapon
The best-in-slot (BIS) secondary weapon for Illium is Princess No's Lucent Wings.
Defeat PNo and collect 15 of the emblems she drops. Then, double-click on the emblems in your inventory to obtain your secondary.
WSE Lines
As you approach the end game, the most optimal potential lines on Illium’s weapon, secondary weapon, and emblem is 9/0/0 (9 lines of % M.ATT, 0 lines of % Boss, and 0 lines of % IED).
The familiar system gives access to a lot of additional Boss Damage that’s otherwise unavailable in other regions, and the advent of party bossing around burst windows means your % Damage / Boss becomes excessively high, thus the value of % Boss Damage diminishes. Moreover, 9/0/0 is a better total value due since it also scales well for mobbing.
Does Illium use a CD hat?
Not currently.
What Special Skill (Oz) Rings do we use?
Continuous Ring 4 (Cont4) is substantially better than any other ring we can use. Since we are a DPM class that has peaks of bursts, we can better time with a Continuous Ring’s activation.
Note : Cont5 is a 2 FD gain over Cont4.
Ring of Restraint (RoR) is very rarely ever used on Illium the primary use case being in Kalos where your party doesn't have to chip, and in Kaling P2 where you need to oneshot the boss.
The optimal Ring of Restraint Burst is as follows: ● Wait until less than 3s left on first wings, then > RoR + AB > Origin > Wingbeat > Laser > (Wings ends) > 2nd wings > Wingbeat > (RoR ends)
Weapon Jump (WJ) : Use this when ring swapping with a Ring of Restraint and time it with your 90s HEXA Mortal Wingbeat.
Note : With ring swapping, you cannot comfortably fit in 4 wings.
How do I show my wings without my cape covering them?
Unfortunately after the UI change it seems it is no longer possible to show off your Illiums wings.
Sources of Critical Rate
As a general rule of thumb, always get your characters to 100% Crit Rate. This will ensure that your character is consistently dealing high damage. Illium can obtain Crit Rate through the sources as follows:
Source Value Resulting Crit Rate
Base +5% 5%
Endless Research (^) +20% 25% Lucent Gauntlet Mastery +20% 45% Focus Spirit (^) +10% at level 3 55% Decent Sharp Eyes +10% 65% Legion Artifact +20% 85% Night Lord Legion Block (^) +4% at level 200 89% Marksman Legion Block (^) +4% at level 200 93%
Rebel Badge (Familiars) (^) +1% 94% Ocean Badge (Familiars) (^) +1% 95% Commerci Badge (Familiars) +1% 96% If your Crit Rate is low, adding 4 points into your Hyper Stats will solve this. Doing so is better than taking 4 blocks on your Legion grid.
Link Skills for Bossing
For Beginner Illiums
For End Game Illiums
Honorable Mentions
You can always elect to swap out certain link skills based on your stats or bossing situation. Below are a few notable link skills that can be useful.
Skill Class Effect (Lv. 2/3) Why
Light Wash Luminous +15/20% IED
Always use this unless you have a visual IED of above 97.5%
Time to Prepare Kain Damage 17s for 20 seconds (40s CD)
Take this primarily for Culvert and bosses that you do not chip in like Kalos
Hybrid Logic Xenon +10% All Stat
Exactly the same as kain link, maybe 0.1 FD lower, however it is more consistent
Unfair Advantage Cadena
+6% Damage Against Lower Level +6% Damage
Use if you are over the level of enemy (Kain or Xenon are better if you are not)
Elementalism Kanna +10% Damage Always run this if solo bossing
Noble Fire Adele
4% Boss Damage, up to 12% in a 6-man party
Only use this if you are bossing in a 6-man party
Close Call/ Spirit of Freedom *if in server
Shade/ Resistance Avoiding death
Use if you’re scared of the boss fight and you are playing for lives
Legion Artifact
Illium gets everything we need in our first 6 Artifact pieces. We advise this order:
Artifact 1 Boss Damage IED Crit Rate
Artifact 2 Boss Damage IED Crit Rate
Artifact 3 Attack Critical Damage Damage
Artifact 4 Attack Critical Damage Damage
Artifact 5 Summon Duration Buff Duration All Stat
Artifact 6 Summon Duration Buff Duration All Stat
Artifact 7 Cooldown Skip
Artifact 8 Cooldown Skip
Artifact 9 N/A
For training/farming, replace Artifact 5 and 6 with EXP, Meso, and Item Drop , as these stats are the least important to us.
The +1 mobs is part of the EXP line and applies to our Crystal Gate attacks , making it +4. If you also have the +1 mobs in your IA, then it’ll be +5.
V-Matrix (5th Job)
5th job is vital to Illium, as it provides some critical skills that boost our damage and gameplay experience. Thus, Illium is a node intensive class and will require some investment.
Boost Nodes/Tri-Nodes
If you’re unfamiliar with the V-Matrix system and Boost Nodes in general, we highly recommend watching a tutorial. This is usually a confusing topic without a visual explanation. There are a few different YouTube videos out there. Here’s one by Ereklo Game you can reference: 5th Job VMATRIX Simplified For YOU in Maplestory!
After the introduction of the HEXA Mastery Cores, all 8 skills will need to be boosted. You will need 3 sets of boost nodes (6 boost nodes total). Since we don't have a 9th skill, you can pick any skill to repeat just make sure each skill is boosted at least twice.
Here is an example of a V-Matrix setup by Illium player, Zultan:
Another Example:
Written example of Tri-Nodes needed:
● Radiant Javelin & Winged Javelin ● Reaction Destruction II ● Machina & Reaction
2
● Umbral Brand III ● Deus & Ex ● Longinus Spear
3
● Vortex Wings & Crystal Skill ● Longinus Zone ● (This slot can be any node, like in the picture it’s a 3rd dupe of Umbral Brand since we don’t have a 9th skill to boost)

New active Skill that we get, can be used to switch between Fake Crystals (Left Skill) or double reactions from the real Crystal (Right Skill, Passive).
HEXA Matrix (6th Job)
If you’re unfamiliar with the HEXA Matrix system, it may help to watch a guide. There are a few different YouTube videos out there. Here’s one by the player, ibb1, you can reference: A SIMPLE 6th Job HEXA Matrix Guide | Maplestory
6th job is a game changer for Illium for a number of reasons. Outside of getting an origin skill (Mytocrystal Expanse), which supplies a 10s bind, here are some highlights:
Enhances our main skill, Javelin, that increases its damage and charges the Crystal faster. Every 30 HEXA Radiant Javelin unleashes a triple Javelin attack that gives 30 charges to the Crystal, speeding up the charging process for Wings of Glory. This is extremely important for bossing.
Enhances Vortex Wings → Mortal Wingbeat. Prior to 6th job, many opted to not use Vortex Wings due to its lack of damage. Now, Mortal Wingbeat deals a significant chunk of damage and has become part of our burst.
Enhances both Reactions (Destruction and Domination), increasing their damage and hitboxes. This greatly boosts both our farming and bossing experience.
HEXA Longinus Spear. Longinus Spear is a skill that Illiums use as a way to charge the crystal, it’s decent damage and you would want to use it as often as possible when outside of Wings of Glory. (Gives the Crystal 15 charges)
HEXA Leveling Infographic
Below are the infographics outlining the leveling priority for the HEXA matrix. The Milestone Edition will be current up until the 2min and M3/M4 changes.
_HEXA leveling guides made by bluemagic123. Graphic made by Luxuriously._
Upgrade Masteries or Sol Janus first?
While Sol Janus makes farming easier (and even lazier for Illium), you may find that you’re lacking damage to one-shot mobs in Grandis. This has become an increasingly common experience due to hyperburns, since your leveling outpaces your gear progression. It is generally recommended that you unlock the HEXA Masteries first to instantly gain more damage.
HEXA Stat
Our priority from highest to lowest:
Magic Attack > Main Stat (INT) > Crit Damage > Boss Damage
How to DPS as Illium
General Attacking
DPSing on Illium requires using Javelin and Longinus Spear. This is because Javelin is our main attack and Longinus Spear gives the Crystal 15 charges. It takes 150 charges to fully charge the Crystal and enter Wings of Glory. Most of Illium’s damage comes from using Wings, so you’ll want to charge as fast as possible to keep up with the timing of your burst cooldowns.
Crystal Attunement. This is a skill Ilium gets at 5th Job it’s located in your V-Matrix, upon using it you would want to select the skill on the right side called ‘’Crystalline Essence’’ this is a new passive skill which makes your Crystal do double the reactions without having to place down a fake Crystal and it’s what we use for bossing.
IMPORTANT :
Wings of Glory
When you enter Wings of Glory, no mashing is needed–just hold down Javelin.
Mobbing & Farming
Here is a YouTube guide made by Illium player, Ibly: Maplestory Simple Illium Mobbing Guide 2025
The video covers:
1. Pre-200 training
2. Crystal Gate farming (multi-portal vs. one portal)
3. Rotations in Arcane River
4. Post 260 (6th job) training
5. Sol Janus: Dusk vs. Dawn
6. Rotations in Grandis
When farming, Wings of Glory can be used as a loot timer since it’s up every minute or so. Fly around as your pet loots! (This is especially glorious if you have a vac pet.)
For further recommendations on maps and rotations, join the #IlliumGang Discord to see what the community has compiled!
Bossing & Bursting
Illium is currently a 2-minute DPM class. Half of our damage comes from Wings of Glory. Our burst isn't all that big compared to other classes, but it’s still a decent chunk of damage. Since most of our damage comes from Wings, skills like Grandis Goddess Blessing and Conversion Overdrive nicely synergize since they last the entire "burst" duration.
Our mini-burst is very simple Cast Deus before entering Wings. Illium can also min-max their damage by using the Crystalline Spirit’s reactions (such as Destruction and Domination) during Wings downtime. Your goal is to be able to charge up Wings before the big buffs (Grandis Goddess Blessing and Conversion Overdrive) come into play. The game plan is to keep the Crystal near the boss while charging it.
Burst Rotation
IMPORTANT :
Enter Wings of Glory.
Our origin skill, Mytocrystal Expanse, increases Wings of Glory duration by 10s, for a total of 30s, so make sure to use it AFTER popping Wings of Glory.
Origin skills have a 360s cooldown, so pop this every 6min. Use Erda Nova bind in between.
Omit Mytocrystal Expanse and Mortal Wingbeat if you do not yet have 6th job.
Buff Sequence
It’s recommended to take advantage of the new Buff Sequence feature in-game to increase your efficiency, as Illium’s burst requires a bit more setup than other classes. Doing so will save you a few seconds from pressing your keys manually.
Courtesy of Illium player, Zultan:
Upon loading into the map :
Optional :
Then use the following buff sequence :
Then proceed with the rest of the burst :
If no origin, delay Terms and Conditions (AB link) by 5-10s so you can cast 2nd Wings within its duration.
After 1st Wings end: Use the following buff sequence:
Optional :
Then proceed with the rest of the burst :
The Illium Jiggle / Link Skill
If you watch Ilium’s boss, you may notice that whenever they’re in Wings, they do an up-and-down “jiggle”. This is to keep our link skill, Tide of Battle , active and at max stacks, which is based on movement.
Tide of Battle
Type: Passive
Max Level: 2
Keeps the Tide of Battle from breaking. For a short time, damage increases each time you move a certain distance.
Level 1 : Activated when moving a certain distance. Max number of stacks: 4 times, Duration: 15 sec, Damage per stack: +2%
Level 2 : Activated when moving a certain distance. Max number of stacks: 4 times, Duration: 15 sec, Damage per stack: +3%
Culvert (Outdated 10/28/2025)
Culvert scores will vary based on a variety of factors, such as your character’s overall strength, whether or not you have Special Skill (Oz) rings, 6th job, etc. And of course, how much effort you’re willing to put in. Therefore, rotations can vary from player to player.
For end-game Illiums, there are a few rotations we can use to maximize our output. Using Continuous and/or Ring of Restraint is preferred. However, if you don’t have these rings or only one of them, run a stat ring(s). If you just have a Ring of Restraint , but no Weapon Jump Ring , just run a stat ring.
Here is a Culvert rotation by Zultan (88k): no reset 88k 42 ori laser ror double clap in fatal

Bossing Tips & Tricks
Illium’s diverse mobility and high survivability allows for one of the most unique bossing experiences in the game. See below for tips & tricks we’ve compiled regarding the usage of our skills, as well as things to keep in mind while bossing.
Skills / Kit
Skill Tips & Tricks
Wings of Glory
Provides super speed, as well as super stance (resists knockback). You can also teleport while in Wings for extra speedy movement. You can outrun just about anything!
Longinus Zone
Great iframe for brief instances. It’s great for “tanking” quick attacks you think you won’t survive or can’t get out of in time.
Crystalline Bulwark
There are a few different ways you can utilize this party iframe:
1. Protect yourself (obviously)
2. Protect your party from dying in a critical moment
3. Use while bursting (after bind) to ensure your party can get sufficient damage in
Crystal Skill Resonance
While this is primarily a healing skill, you can opt to use this right before entering a boss fight to ensure you have max (10) Lucent Brand stacks upon loading in.
Heals through Black Mage’s black curse.
Crystal Gate
Summoning 2 Crystal Gates can be very handy in certain bosses so you can teleport back and forth to avoid attacks. However, it can be a double-edged sword, as you can accidentally teleport into danger or death.
Longinus Spear
Once a useless skill, now our main form of charging outside of the passive charge, Longinus Spear is a skill that you would want to use off cooldown anytime that your Crystal isn’t fully charged since it gives 15 Crystal charges per use and it can be cooldown skipped.
Make sure to set your Crystal Attunement to this one on the right for when you are bossing!
Bosses
Boss Tips & Tricks
Vellum
Make sure to telecast (attacking while teleporting) between the tails. You must fly extremely high to avoid the tails during Wings of Glory.
Damien
Damien is the easiest boss for us!
Make sure that you save your Wings of Glory for when he goes into the air. He basically self-binds whenever he does. If you do not have Wings when he goes into the air, you can fly up a bit and drop a Crystalline Spirit below him. This pathway/chain will allow you to hit him from the ground with Javelin and Orb.
You can duck Damien’s dashes in P2 and iframe the sword explosion when it lands on the altar to cleanse. In P2, you can fly to the center when he’s in a tornado attack and dodge all his damage.
You can also fly over the blue orbs to deal full damage. I recommend using origin when flying in the air, as well as teleporting away before you use Crystal Ignition.
Lucid
You can fly over Golems in P1, but you have to go up to the very top of the ceiling.
After you see the message a dragon is coming, count 6s and then start iframe to continue damaging through it.
P2 touch is slower than Wings of Glory.
For lasers, fly in an O figure and it’ll be extremely hard to die.
If dragon and lasers are happening at the same time, or if Lucid sickles during dragon, iframe through.
If you fail to cleanse butterflies, you can also iframe the initial butterfly attack (before toho).
Make sure going into P3 that you have Flash Crystal Battery ready.
Will
Your summons will not attack the P1 test if you throw the Crystal to the side. However, Deus will.
You can fly over the tornado attack.
If you do not have enough moonlight before test, you can iframe through it.
Upon spawning into P2, let your team know that you will iframe them so you can gather moonlight without worrying about dying.
You can float/fly during P2 to dodge the spiders that scurry across the ground.
P3 revolves around Will’s stay and move attacks. If a web spawns on you, you will die. To dodge move, you either jump up and fly horizontally, or you go into Wings and fly horizontally. Timing teleport is 50/50 as it’s heavily ping based.
Gloom
As soon as the text says that Gloom is opening its eye, just fly up all the way.
During the time the eye is open, you can DPS it without penalty, including during laser. Wings of Glory has super stance, so you will not get sucked into the laser.
For darkness, I recommend saving your Flash Crystal Battery. Do large circles around to activate the darkness as much as possible and kill the mobs. The darkness monsters will take a second to actually attack and you’re fast enough to dodge almost all of their attacks.
Do not be afraid to iframe your teammates if they’re in darkness. If they die in darkness it increases everyone else's time in it.
Darknell
Darknell is a boss that you can only get good on by practicing and running it a lot. Some tips are to play close to him and be mindful of your surroundings. Once you get used to the boss and what each of his knights do, you will have a much better chance.
Now that we have an up jump, it’s very useful to use to avoid his orbs and arrows. Aside from that, you can play close to him and teleport behind him if he does his map attack or does sword up slashes.
Remember that you can also duck his sideways sword slash attack.
Other than that, good luck!
Verus Hilla
Healing Familiars are key. The best trick is to iframe your team during burst if there is poison or a corpse in the corner.
I recommend practicing the timing of her push as you can cancel the push back with a well-timed fly.
Grabbing the altar is one of your jobs as you have one of the most precise movement techniques in the game.
You can fly above strings if you absolutely need to. You can also and jump up and fly a bit, as sometimes there’s more room in the air than on the ground for strings.
